The reflex gauge glass has right-angled grooves (1) on the facing the medium.

In accordance with the physical law of total reflection, incoming light rays (2) and (3) are completely absorbed in the liquid space (4) but are directly reflected in the steam, air or vapour space. The liquid space therefore appears black the vapour pace silver white. The liquid level can thereby clearly be recognized.

The grooves are molded into the glass during manufacture and give the hard surface increased durability by comparison with the ground grooves commonly used in other glasses. The stress condition of the finished glass in checked by optical measurements.
